In keeping with my fascination with Chicago catalog guitars and special fondness for Kays - check out these patterns from the old Kay Factory. Speed Demon, Galaxie, Red Devil, etc. They all seem to have some sort of registration device on them. I just think they're really cool.

That's really cool. They could double as wall art when not being used.

Old Black - I wish I knew for sure.

I suspect they were used for tracing outlines, maybe before a rough cut on a bandsaw(?). The outside edges are darkened - could be pencil lead. Little notches top and bottom indicate the center line.

I wonder why the inside of the template is so nicely cut out, but there's no indication the insides were used for tracing. That and the arched bracing for the handles could be just nice craftsmanship, or maybe so an arch-top could fit underneath(?).

BTW, the numbers on them correspond to various Kay models, except for 1133.

Anybody else have any ideas?

Very nice. Great wall art in their spare time.
