Hello friends, I know that guitar pedals generally are not discussed here, but it is a very "simple" question. Some time ago, my original volume pot developed scratchy sound problem. I found a replacement 250k pot. After I installed it, i noticed that as soon as I began to move the pedal downwards I get 95% of the volume in the first 20% of the distance. I remember the volume increase being more linear and proportional. Today I tried 60K pot, 25k pot and the 500k one- all doing the same thing. Does anyone know what the problem is?
thanks.

Did you get an audio taper pot instead of linear?

That would be my guess. Make sure you are ordering linear pots...

Incorrect.

It should be an audio taper pot. 25k audio.

From Ernie Ball's website,

Quote:
ERNIE BALL VOLUME PEDALS

WHAT ARE THE VALUES OF THE POTENTIOMETERS THAT YOU USE IN YOUR PEDALS, AND ARE THEY AUDIO OR LINEAR TAPER?

And here is the answer(s)

Quote:
VP line potentiometers: 25K Stereo Audio (log) taper, 250K Mono Audio (log) taper, 500K Stereo Linear taper;

VPJR line potentiometers: 25K Mono Audio (log) taper, 250K Mono Audio (log) taper

Looks like both answers are coorect depending on the actual pedal.

Thank you for all the replies. I am tempted to buy both (25k and 250k) and see which one I like the most. In my strat I have 250k pot, but I respect tangelolemon"s knowledge, so I will start with 25K. I will let you know what is the best solution. Smile

im not sure whether 25k or 250k would be better in the EB Jr. pedal.

If it says an "A" after the value, then it's audio taper. If it says "B" it's linear taper.

What not everyone realizes is that our ears hear logarithmically, not linearly-- a doubling of sound (air) pressure in Pascals is only a 3dB increase in decibels!

This is why a 100 watt amp isn't "twice as loud" as a 50w amp. All else equal, with the same speaker load, it will be 3dB louder.
