I picked up this guitar for $80 at a pawn shop. When I got it I was thinking about giving it a paint job and selling it to one of my guitar students or their friends, or upgrading it and keeping it for myself.

Last night I took it to a gig and played it for our Blues Bros. set and it actually sounded pretty good.

It plays decent, stayed in tune and really sounded pretty good for that style of music the way it is. I may keep it for myself. May still paint it, though. What about Surf Green with a pearl pickguard? What do you think.

SG is a classic color and the pearl guard would be a classy touch. I'd say go for it.

I'd leave it alone for a while and just play it. It will tell you when it's ready for a change of clothes. Wink

I like the body/PG combo you have there, myself...I'd refin. the neck, though to be a more vintage amber color. Maybe put a Fender decal on it just to enhance the vibe.

Ha!, my original post was to leave it as is but I erased it. I said to go for it afterwards so it would have a nitro finish on there as opposed to the armor plating it probably sports now. Don't Squiers have a polyurethane coat? Sorry, I have become a nitro snob these days. Rolling Eyes I like urethane finishes for convenience but on my own stuff I really do prefer nitro. It has nothing to do with tonal aspects, just the feel and the ability to age is what I like about it more than any other characteristic.

Hi, my name is Joe and I'm a nitro snob.

+1 amber neck

Enjoy it awhile and then go green. I sold my Squier Strat last year because I was making room. I bought in in 1990. Last month I saw the guy was selling it so I bought it back. I am thinking of giving it to my son, but that thing has always been so reliable. It's a MIK Squier by Fender model.

squires can be a lot of fun, since you don't have to worry so much about preserving their value...and every now and then you find that one that is a killer player. I just hate that super light neck tone they do on these. I recently bought a squire p-bass that I am refinishing, and one of the newer "vintage modified strats". It is actually the same color scheme as that tele, but with rosewood board. Haven't actually received it yet so we'll see how it goes.

I have to agree that the neck could use some more color and I am also interested in sanding off the Squier logo and replacing it.

I have read some prefer the RR tinted clear over the neck amber. In either case, would the neck have to be stripped first or can I spray over the existing neck finish?

Thanks for the feedback.
