Just to clarify on the measurement: You should be measuring from pin 4/5 to pin 9, not from 4 to 5 (or to ground). If you measure from pin 9 (or pin 4/5) to ground, you should get around 3 volts.

Yeah, it's almost certainly a ground issue (whether the ground connection is bad, or the jack is backwards). That, or you've got bees trapped in it somewhere! Laughing

I suppose it's possible to overheat the pot and cause damage. Have you tried just directly wiring the pickups to the jack to see what that sounds like? Might be worth a shot. I would think the 500k ...
