It depends on how you're applying the dye. If you're wiping the dye on it needs to go directly to the wood, but in the page you linked to here, the second color was mixed with lacquer and sprayed. ...

Just listen to a Gibson vs a fender. The tone is 10x fatter.

I realize it's all completely subjective, but some of the greatest guitar sounds ever recorded have been on Fenders--SRV, Clapton, Hendr ...
