Point of clarification - are you talking about tapping in the tuners themselves, or the ferrules/bushings?

Any type of wire will work for grounding, although i would avoid a bare wire to prevent inadvertent short circuits.

100% sure you have the output jack wired the right way around? The symptoms are right. I've made that error more times than I care to admit. Embarassed
